First Reading

The readings are proclaimed from the Old Testament. Usually, the main figures in the Old Testament, are the Prophets, who are classified as the Early Prophets and the Canonical Prophets.

These readings are usually connected with the main theme of the day which is rooted from the Gospel and originate from the forefathers.

Psalms

A Psalm is to be sung, since the term psalm is of Hebrew origin to mean, sing.

All the liturgical songs that are sung in the Mass, are usually in line with the 150 Psalms.

The responsorial Psalm connects the Theme of the Gospel reading to the theme of the Old Testament Reading.

Second Reading

These may not necessarily be of the same theme as the Gospel, but occasionally has applicable teaching to the Gospel.

The Second reading is rooted from the New Testament, majorly from the Pauline literature; the Letters and Epistles.

Gospel Acclamation/Special Acclamation

The main theme is found in the Gospel and this theme is welcomed by an acclamation, where the Faithful are invited to stand.

The Standing is a sign of reverence that an important guest (Jesus) is going to speak, and we stand to respect the guest.

The Gospel

The Gospel is to be read by the Deacon. The Priest reads the Gospel if there is no Deacon in that Mass and marked with a cross as a sign of reverence and a kiss after proclaiming it.

Standing of the Faithful while listening to the Gospel, is the dominant culture since it has been a practice for over 1900 years. Whereas in other communities, sitting down on the ground is a sign of respect.

Therefore;

The Church proclaims both the Old and New Testaments.

The readings are the word of God handed on to us and written under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
